8 items that may contain asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fiber and known human carcinogen that can cause chronic lung disease as well as lung and other cancers, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

OSHA outlines the most common materials that may contain asbestos if installed prior to 1981:

  1. Thermal system insulation
  2. Roofing and siding shingles
  3. Vinyl floor tiles
  4. Plaster, cement, putties and caulk
  5. Ceiling tiles and spray-on coatings
  6. Industrial pipe wrapping
  7. Heat-resistant textiles
  8. Automobile brake linings and clutch pads
